Description

"When we talk about being yourself and being who you want to be, it's about shoving your middle finger in the air. We try to show people that you shouldn't be apologetic for being the way you are or the way you want to be. You don't need to be depressed or 'emo' for being who you are. You should emphasise and celebrate your differences. If it weren't for peoples differences, the world would be boring as hell... or heaven depending on what way you look at it. There are alot of bands who seem happy to address youthful aleination by saying, 'Yeah, you're sad, we're sad, let's wallow in it'. That's not our stance on it at all. It's about the rock 'n' roll idea of have a good time, party, be yourself and fuck everybody else. I think our fans know that what Black Veil Brides are saying, 'Hey it's alright to be weird or different'. In that way, we represent the ultimate outcasts."

hmm, nice quote. i'm all for freedom of thought and expression, and i admit, i love it when people do and wear out-of-the-ordinary stuff. but as a person who studies psychology and sociology, i'm also skeptical. humans have evolved to conform, to follow social norms. is that a good thing? maybe, maybe not. depends on the situation, and the norm. i do believe that we as a whole don't express ourselves enough. we're too afraid of being chastised to speak our minds (which, over time, will hopefully change). but what people don't seem to realize is, that's not a sign of weakness - it's built in, innate. it's human nature to want to belong. belonging is important. (on the flip side, people should be more open-minded and acceptant of those who are different, but that's another beast to tackle.)

"be yourself" is something everyone hears nowadays. entertainment is filled with people who preach that message - lady gaga, for one. and before her was madonna. but the problem is, no one really knows who they are or how to find themselves. everyone tells you to be true to yourself, but no one tells you *how* to do that. someone might say, "be true to your beliefs." well, okay, but where do beliefs come from? the outside world - family, friends, the media, etc. sure, they can be tweaked and what have you, but they still have origins elsewhere. and no matter how bizzare and "unique to you" your beliefs may seem, there's always someone else out there who believes the same way.

even outcasts who never feel like they belong have qualities consistent with human nature, and going against the grain is a lot harder than people think. haven't you noticed how all these so-called "anti-conformists," like emos and goths, look a lot like each other?

i'm not trying to step on anyone's toes or be a contrarian. i do believe that each human has individual characteristics that set him or her apart from everyone else. but i believe these characteristics are buried and not nearly as plentiful as the characteristics that we all share.

anyway, just my two cents. sorry to ramble.
